Here was my attempt at getting to Bolton for the Annual Xmas do! The second 'Big Freeze' of December 2010 had effected the gathering in big way (only 7 of us turned up!!) and it could have been 6 if I hadn't have made it! Luckily I got through the snow and made it to the do.

I headed home the following day (still feeling the effects of the booze!).

Sunday 7th and Monday 8th November 2010

And so we are here again. One year ago since we lost Fleetwood as a location for traditonal trams, the tramway at Blackpool was closed again for Winter engineering.
It was a nice way to see the tram year off with plenty of reserve/rare cars making appearences as well the regulars.
I had one last ride on Twin set 675+685, which like 672+682 had become regular companions during my days bashing the trams! One last ride on the Western Train through the lights, 717 to Fleetwood one last time this year and I also cleared 100 miles off both 711 and 717 by the end in the early hours of Monday 8th!

The last run with 711 to North Pier was delayed at Norbreck when one of the passengers on board was taken ill. Once the ambulance had been and gone we were on our way again. I arrived into North Pier at approx 01:15!!

I was meant to have gone to the ELR today for a day behind 'Tornado', but after learning that I was made 'Employee of the month' at work and granted a day off, full pay, I decided to do this move on Saturday 30th instead! It would be a lot cheaper than paying the Peak fare if I went down to Bury today!
So, I did a tram bash instead and I'm kind of glad I did this now as I would never have got 'Marton' 31 for haulage! Yes, the tram was a 'red pen' for me so to have it on the first tram ride of the day was a rather pleasing! Couldn't beleieve it when I saw her rumbling her way down Blackpool Prom! At first I thought it may be an enthusiast tour or something but she pulled up at Rigby Road tram stop with the driver shouting 'All stops to North Pier only' - SORTED!
The day also included rides on 600 (my first ride since overhaul), 602, 701 and 706!

The visit to the ELR Steam gala included scooping in A1 Peppercorn 60163 'Tornado', 'Black 5' 45337 and 'Standard' 73129. 5690 'Leander' was also included although I had 'haulaged' this 'Kettle' before!
I also bumped into a Kettle-bashing friend of mine, Mike Atkinson, (along with his mate) and we had a laugh throughout the time I was there!

What a nice way to spend a Sunday - in the company of BLS and 55022 'Royal Scots Grey'!

The day started for me with a taxi move from my gaff to Blackpool North train station (again I forgot to note down which taxi I had, not that I care personally!) and then jumped the 0814 TPE service to Preston (which had Compass Tours person Shaun Courtnage as guard!). I then took the Virgin 'Pendolino' (which had been dragged from Longsight ECS by 57303) to Wigan North Western. I took breakfast here (full english of course!).
'The Ribble Lune' railtour started from Crewe (Del22 leading) and visited Northwich TC (where it became delayed by about 50 minutes - Great start!). I picked the tour up from Wigan North Western (66066 leading by this time) and the tour headed down to Preston Docks and the Ribble Steam Railway. After a short 45 minute break there (should have been 1hr 30mins but the delay put a stop to that! - Not that I'm too bothered as 1hr 30mins would have been way too much time for the fact there's nothing there apart from the railway centre!) we headed out of the docks with 55022 at the helm and made an attempt to climb the notorious gradient back onto the mainline. Predictably, the hill proved to much for RSG and the '66' assisted from the rear. Once back on the mainline, 66066 then took charge again and hauled the train to Morecombe junction. 55022 then took us to Heysham power station with the '66' taking us back to Morecombe junction. RSG then worked the return leg back to Crewe via Carnforth, Settle junction, Helifield, Blackburn, Darwen, Bolton (where I bailed!), Manchester Piccadilly, Stockport, Altrincham, Northwich, Middlewich and Sandbach.

After the tour, I jumped the 185 unit back to Preston (where got my tea - Cheeseburger and chips [the nice healthy option!]) and then it was the 150 unit back to St. Annes.

All in all it was a great day out, plenty of new track 'scratched' and plenty of thrash from Deltic! I must admit I was never keen on RSG after her 'Leg-out-of-bed' incident a fewe years ago (thus resulting in that rancid marine engine being installed). I sort of lost faith in RSG (with the loco rejecting the marine engine, resulting in a series of failures) but after today, with the loco having one of D9016's engines installed, the loco really was on top form and sounded magnificent.

Praises to the BLS for organsing the tour, Martin Walker for providing the loco and everyone else behinds the scenes!

Day 2 of the event and my last day here! Believe me, roughing it in my mates car for three nights was not that great! Thus making three days at the event hard work! I got 37003, 37037, 37109, 37219, 37275, 37423, 37518, 37601, 37906 and 97301 this day! 37003 (running as 37360) was brought back to life as too was 37518 (although 518 was not well at all!) 37601 also made an appearence for her naming and post-naming working with 37423!
37219 suffered a battery failure the previous day but, like 003 and 518, was brought back to life this day!

So today I scooped 37003 for haulage, same for 37518 and 37601 for livery.

The first day of the Mid Norfolk's Class 37 'Golden Jubilee' 50th Anniversary event. I was really looking forward to this event, I felt it appropriate I make an appearence to show my appreciation to the loco that stole my soul! LOL

The event didn't get off to the greatest of starts though, both 37003 and 37518 were sidelined with problems. Which was really annoying as I required both! But I did finally scoop in 37423 after 15 years of chasing the bugger! 423 always seemed to escape my clutches over the years but finally I caught up with her!
There was also a farce in the morning when a southbound train with 37906 on the rear was blocking the crossing at Thuxton and this saw alot of disgruntled passengers being left behind as 97301 pulled out of the station towards Wymondham! The train was turned back just north of Kimberley Park to pick everyone up who got left behind! You got to give the MNR their dues for that!

I 'caned' 37029 for her livery, same with D6737, 37109 for the MNR, 37219 for haulage, same again for 37275, and 37423, and 97301 (ex-37100 for haulage). Only 37706 and 37906 were completly dud engines! Although 706 is of course the final 'Oldham Looper' and 906 is just a caged animal! LOL

The locos that worked were: 37029, 37037, 37109, 37219, 37275, 37423, 37706, 37906 and 97301.

A day on the LTT-organised tram running day for the 125 celebrations. Tram cars used on the 'tour' were 'Brush' 632, 'Coronation' 304 and 'Liverpool' 762.

After the tram bash, I then headed down to Warrington Bank Quay to be picked up by some friends of mine to head down to the Mid Norfolk Railway for what was THE Class 37 event of the year...
(Also, on my journey to WBQ I saw Steam loco 61994 with it's support coach in the former platform 7 at Preston on a move from Carnforth to Barrow Hill!)

Oh f**k! My head hurts! Just got back from Compass' 'Snowdon Mountineer' tour with 47712 and 47802 top and tail. Plenty of laughs and drinking went on I had a bloody good day as it happens! Although 47-hauled, it was still a good day out! lol It was also nice to get 47802 in the book. I spent bloody years chasing that thing - I finally got it today!
47712 certainly did the class proud too, with it's clag and loud sound!
The only disapointment of the day being the loss of the trip to Llandudno (town).

My best wishes go to Compass and all involved behind the scenes. John, Kev - you've done it again! Keep it up guys, show all the other railtour companies how it's done! lol

What should have been a straight forward out and back trip into Blackpool to purchase my tickets for Thursday's trip to Norfolk via Warrington, turned into a brief tram bash! Rarely-seen 'Balloon' car 701 was just coming off the centre track at North Pier, heading south as I was on the bus going home! So I leapt from the bus at Central Pier and piled onto 701 for a quick blast to Pleasure Beach and back!
Unfortunetly, I didn't note down the buses I travelled on to and from Blackcpool so all I have here is the tram move!

One last bash on the number 12 Heritage bus before the service ceases for the year. The actual last day is next week but I shall be at the Mid Norfolk Railway this day, so this was my last chance. And I finished on a winning bus! Nice! This being Routemaster no. 521.
Unfortunetly I couldn't do a full day on the route as I was working in the afternoon. So it was just one round trip I'm afraid! Such is life!

What should have been just simple trip to Starr Gate to watch the 2010 Blackpool Illuminations launch turned into a bash! But I certainly payed the price for it - in more ways than one!
After walking up South Prom photting the lights, I then photted the trams on the loop at Pleasure Beach. It was then I noticed 706 'Princess Alice'! Noting that I'd not actually had 706 this year, I didn't want to make the only ride on 706 of the year at Heaton Park! So I took the decision to pile onto the crowded tram (top deck, naturally!) and spun her to North Pier.
After this, I then jumped the bus from Market Street (Blackpool) to head home. Yeeeaaah, wasn't that simple... I was gonna wait for the no.11 but I noted that the no.17 arrived first. Fair do's I would havwe to walk back from St. Annes Square to get home but I would still beat the no.11 to it. Or so I thought...
On the way to St. Annes, some complete eejit decided to throw his guts up on the bus after too much of the fine stuff! (Tut, tut, tut!). The driver then had to fail the bus as it was now a 'Health Hazard' so then me and the rest of the passengers had to wait for a replacement bus! The guy who throw up was not popular after that, believe me!
So eventually the replacement bus arrived and we all piled onto it. I got back to the Square at 23:30 - 15 minutes after the no.11 would have dropped me outside my gaff!

So the moral of the story is - wait for the bus you intended to wait for! lol

Bank Holiday Monday 30th August 2010

A truly fantastic day out in the company of Compass Tours, 55022 and an assortment of loonies who I was sat with for most of the day! ('Big up' Bradleigh, Sam Bacon, Lofty and Mike Williams). All marks go to the 'Deltic 22' crew for providing their loco as a late substitute for the unfortunate D1015 'Western Champion'. And of course thanks go to the one, the only, Compass Tours! My devil horns are raised for John Melia and his brother Kevin, you guys are the best ;)

The day also included a run on the ONLY direct Blackpool North to Colne service of the day, which was the 04:56 departure! And also my first ever Class 180 for haulage!

A trip out for a bash on John Melia's 'Spoonex' from Crewe to Preston via Manchester.
The locos were 47712 leading with 47501 on the rear.
The trip to Crewe was trying enough - a bus from my place to Blackpool North station, the 150 unit to Preston, a 'Voyager' to Warrington for the rail replacement bus to Crewe! Phew!
Anyway, got there and did the 'duffs' through to Preston before jumping my unit(s) to Blackpool North for the taxi home!

Yeah, yeah, yeah – same old tram bash day, but with a few differences! This day was spent mostly on ‘Balloon’ 717, ‘Twin’ 672+682 and ‘Standard’ 147 (which came out for an evening session on Pleasure Beach - North Piers!) I could have had ‘Twin’ 675+685 as well but this pair unfortunately suffered a failure at Bispham in the early afternoon and had to return to depot. Still, for what was on offer and that combined with the nice weather – it was a ruddy good day! Still, despite the nice weather – Blackpool Prom was lacking in the ‘Boat’ car department! :(

A ‘big up’ goes to a guy called Alan from the 37075 Churnet Valley crew who I got talking to during the course of the day!

The usual stuuf involving trams in Blackpool! But I had a friend to accompany me this time! Carl Wainright from Poynton (a former TMR fellow-member)spent most of the day with me, spinning trams for 'red pen' and mileage!
Another point of note wasv that 'Twin-Car' 671+681 were out this day but they were 'Not In Service'. No evidence of 'Driver Under Instruction' plates so theres a chance they could have been on a test run and maybe making a return to traffic? Who knows? Watch this space!

Alot of drink was consumed and I'm surprised at how I managed to get home! LOL

For the first time since November 2009, I actually rode on a Blackpool tram to FLEETWOOD!!! Albeit, as far as Fisherman’s walk. The line on the tramway opened on the 26th July, much to my surprise!
As well as this surprise, I got another one as soon as I arrived at Rigby Road/The Manchester tram stop – ‘Twin Car’ 675+685 was out in force! This one being on Pleasure Beach – Little Bispham/Thornton Gate services. As well as the ‘Twin Car’, ‘Balloon’ cars 711, 717, 719 and 723 were also out in service. The ‘Balloons’ were on the Fleetwood services. ‘Jubilee’ 762 and a wad of rancid ‘Centenary’ cars were also running. ‘Jubilee’ 761 was out briefly but only managed a few trips before being declared a failure and ran empty to depot. According to BTS tram conductor, Mark Whitehead, this had been 761’s fourth failure this week! Oh dear!
I ran into a bit of a farce myself when, going for 717, I missed the thing at Cleveleys trying to connect from ‘Centenary’ 646. So I quickly hot-footed it on Line 1 bus no. 339 from Cleveleys to North Pier and then ‘Balloon’ 711 from North Pier to Rigby Road/The Manchester to connect with 717! It worked in my favour actually, as it made 717 the first tram to Fleetwood since 706 ‘Princess Alice’ in November 2009!
And one final point of note was trams commencing southbound service from Fisherman’s Walk actually pick up passengers on the crossover between northbound and southbound stops! I found this out by 717’s moves this day!

The year of the Preserved ‘Grid’!

In March 2004, the mainline bid farewell to the Class 56s. However, they rose again in that lovely ‘P’ word – PRESERVATION!
2006 was the year for Class 56 haulage for me again as I scooped in 2 ‘new’ 56s and I had no less than 352 miles of ‘Grid’-haulage! – Not bad for ‘pres’!

Moves from what was an excelent three days on the East Lancs Railway. This was their annual Summer gala (once 9 days now only 3!) But still a bloody good show!

Hello all!

It's my first blog! Yey! I'm totally new to this thing and I shall be building my blog-thingy up slowly. At the moment, it's on the bones of it's arse, but in time it shall be thriving with blogs and members/followers etc.

Most stuff about me is on the 'About Me' bit. My blog is for the purpose of blogging my recent rail 'bashing' moves. I may include moves from the past too if I feel like it!
